Talon grass
Plant Name: Talon grass
Home Island: Orova
Unique Properties (OPT): Talon grass is a hardy plains and desert grass, notably characterized by its round, sturdy stalk that unfurls into an extremely thin and sharp blade. The blades are somewhat dull and silvery in color, and each grows three hard plates at its base. These plates resemble dragon scales and have a unique bluish iridescence.
Talon grass can grow to any height depending on water availability, and seeds in late summer, growing white, wind-carried wisps. Occasionally the grasses will also produce a small fruit from the end of the blade. This fruit is also blue and emits a faint glow.
Practical Uses (OPT): The fruits, when found, are edible and can be dried quite easily. They lose their glow when dried, but retain their bright blue color. Large blades can be strung taught and used as a makeshift saw or knife to cut some materials.
Lore / Traditions / Cultural Significance (OPT): Young faians are advised to stay away from patches of these grasses due to their extremely sharp nature, but many will play with small blades anyway. They are plucked to use as play swords, and young, hollow stalks can be cut and slipped over toes as false claws.
There are rumors of special properties found in the hard "scales," but few know what, if anything, is true. At the very least, they can be ground into paint pigment.
